California College of the Arts

Dean of Design

2017-Present

As dean of the Design Division, my goal is to create a sanctuary for those with radical curiosity, where wonder and imagination are amplified through rigor and craft. The design programs equip makers, thinkers and doers with the wherewithal to envision alternative futures, and the creative capacity to deliver generative solutions and inspire change.

The division offers nine accredited degrees: six undergraduate BFA degrees in Fashion Design, Furniture Design, Graphic Design, Illustration, Industrial Design and Interaction Design; and three graduate degrees, including an MBA in Design Strategy, and MFA in Design and an MDes in Interaction Design.

Pier 70 Interview with Helen Maria

“ Designers have informed intuition about where we’re going and how we can participate in making change. That’s where the artistry is in design, and it involves a very analytical skill set.”

— Helen Maria Nugent, ‘The Interdisciplinary Future of Design’
