Whatnot Studio
Designed Objects Industry Projects
Architecture, Interior Architecture and Design Objects (AIADO), School of the Art Institute of Chicago
Whatnot is a thematic, yearlong studio course in which students design and produce limited-edition collectible objects in response to a unique theme. The course offers an immersive, real-world experience and has helped propel the careers of emerging designers onto the international stage. Each year, the resulting collection of whatnots debuted at the renowned Spazio Rossana Orlandi in Milan during Salone del Mobile.
The Whatnot course became a signature element of the Designed Objects programs. I led the initiative with critical support from SAIC’s Office of Engagement. Since its inception, the course has been team-taught—an effort I’ve led alongside Professors Bruce Tharp, Jim Termeer, and Tim Parsons.

Danese x Designed Objects 2009
The Expanding Classroom
This collaboration between Danese Milano and students in Designed Objects is an examples of SAIC’s Industry Partner Studio developed by Helen Maria Nugent.
The 14 piece collection explores the contemporary context where we work and study everywhere. The objects are surprising, relevant and humorous; a pillow for laptop naps, a tray that saves our keyboards and laptops from destructive coffee spills, and a backpack station, that converts a bag into a piece of furniture.
Taught by Professor Bruce Tharp and guest designer Jonathan Olivarez.
Launched at the Danese Headquarters in Milan during Salone 2009. The objects are staged in a mock dorm-room filled outfitted with Danese furniture and lighting.

Salone Satellite 2009
Objects For The Age of Obama
A collections of objects inspired by change, hope, challenge and allure.
Greg Bethel's Collective Clock is one such object. A cluster of ball bearings moves as one, representing the unification of Americans moving towards the future. The Paper Trail Clock by Andrew Peerless is a cross between a digital clock and a to-do list. As the sheets are torn off, the pad begins thinner and the time is easier to read. The Discipline Desk by Eric Hotchkiss is linked to the idea of personal responsibility, so the user is confronted by unfinished work inside the desk that must be completed. The clutter is obscured by a polarizing film when the user approaches or stands over the desk, but as he or she sits, it becomes all too clearnthat there is work to be done. Evan Walsh's Diplomacy Tool Kit is designed to promotennegotiation and facilitate relationships between users by offering choices, opportunities for mediation, or even a simple break. And Gabriel Hargrove's Secretarial Ashtray (above) is a subtle smoking accessory that tries not to call attention to such a habit.
Taught by Helen Maria Nugent and Bruce Tharp.
Launched at Salone Satellite 2009. The only student exhibition nominated for the prestigious ‘Design Report Award.’

Whatnot 2011
Loaded: Iron + Sugar
The objects in the Loaded collection examine the history, physicality and currency of two catalytic materials: IRON and SUGAR.
LOADED explores the ways in which an object’s value is essentially fluid—continually shaped by our global systems of trade, by real or man-made states of scarcity and abundance, by cultural ideologies, and by human desires.
Iron projects are cast in collaboration with the Chicago Crucible, a boutique metal foundry operated by SAIC alumnus Lloyd Mandelbaum(BFA 2008).
Taught by Helen Maria Nugent + Jim Termeer.
